After his last try in 1905, when he wasnвЂ™t even admitted to the final stage, he was barred from entering any future competition. The desire of every composition student at the Paris Conservatoire was to win the Prix de Rome. His teacher, Gabriel FaurГ©, recognised RavelвЂ™s exceptional talent, never ceasing to support and encourage him. It was soon apparent, however, that he was more gifted at composition. In 1889 he entered the Paris Conservatoire, receiving his PremiГЁre MГ©daille in piano in 1891. Soon after his birth, his parents moved to Paris where Maurice began his piano lessons at the age of seven. Maurice, as a baby, was lulled to sleep to the sound of Iberian folksongs, and indeed Spain became one of his principal sources of inspiration later on. His mother was one hundred per cent Basque and had lived in Spain for many years. It is always said that he was Swiss вЂ“ which is true, he was born there вЂ“ but his parents were Savoyards, which implies a link with Sardinia. His father was a famous engineer, and it was he who first operated a gas-powered automobile.
